Wade is a bona fide star of the House scene, and his revered abilities in the studio and behind the decks are matched by his impressive back catalogue. Considered one of the forefathers of the much celebrated Detroit House sound, Wade has showcased his talents through a musical universe much explored, much travelled and via an unrivalled back catalogue, presented in the most miraculous and meaningful of ways. From ‘Late Night Basix’ on his own Harmonie Park imprint, through to ‘Detroit Noir’, his work is a treasure trove of house excellence, containing one of the genre’s key narratives.
Art is the Place and Wade struck up collaborations via the ‘Birth of Techno’ club night @ Tresor, which formed part of the ‘From Detroit nach Berlin: the birth of Techno’ exhibition, which explored the history of Detroit techno and provided insight into the African American influence on the genre - alongside providing different and empowering perspectives on the genre and the exceptional importance of Detroit techno producers in the genre’s history.
Now, the label has invited Wade to present his latest EP, ‘Deep Incantations Trilogy Vol. 1’, which begins with the aptly named ‘Groove Tool’ to kick things off. The rhythm provides a rock solid undercurrent for soaring synth pads, twinkling piano notes and elegant horns to expertly unravel and intermingle atop. ‘Pimp Prophecy’ lands next, which kicks the tempo up a notch but retains the dreamy melodic waves of the opener. The softest of chordal notions swim in the deep with atmospheric synths and delicate, cascading rhythms. ‘Jazzy Tears’ captures the imagination with its filtered vocal sample, which calls out above the evolving rhythmic palette. The drop reveals a luscious blend of emotive features, which drives forward into the lead chord line that is ready to take any listener into euphoric spaces. To wrap things up, ‘Ooo Ahh’ lands to take us all away. This number again revolves around a playful vocal sample, which draws all manner of melodic elements to it such as cheerful horns and expressive, refined piano notes. A late night burner, an early morning sunrise - Rick Wade has covered the full palette, the inbetweens and the everything. This EP is yet another reminder of his enduring musical spirit, one which aligns itself at the core of the House genre and expresses itself with meaning, purpose and feel. artistheplace recordings couldn’t be more thrilled to share this piece of music with you all and there's plenty more releases to come from their brand new label from some of the scene's best artists.
